COTA exterior race track

Circuit of the Americas

Location: Austin, Texas

When Austin's Circuit of the Americas was racing toward its November 2012 grand opening as America's first purpose-built Formula One facility, the flooring installation schedule was just as tight as the turns on the track. With only two months to install 275,000 square feet of flooring across multiple buildings, Intertech delivered on time and on budget.

THE CHALLENGE

Circuit of the Americas needed a flooring contractor who could handle a fast-track construction schedule without compromising quality. The high-profile venue required design consultation and installation of carpet tile, resilient and ceramic tile across numerous buildings, all while maintaining strict budget constraints and an aggressive timeline leading up to the inaugural Formula 1 US Grand Prix.

General contractor Austin Commercial knew this project demanded exceptional scheduling expertise and fast-track experience. With construction completing in less than 30 months and flooring as one of the last trades to start, there was zero room for delays or missteps.

OUR SOLUTION

Intertech invested over a year in pre-construction support before contract award, providing budget numbers for multiple buildings and delivering professional design consultation throughout the planning process. We responded quickly to sample requests and took teams from Austin Commercial and the German architecture/engineering firm Tilke to view actual installations of proposed flooring options at other facilities.

Our approach combined:

  • Early engagement with transparent, accurate budget numbers
  • Responsive design support and efficient customer service
  • Strategic scheduling to work within the compressed timeline
  • An onsite installation crew of 15-25 progressing building by building

THE RESULTS

Installation began in September 2012 and wrapped up by November 11, just days before the inaugural Formula 1 US Grand Prix on November 16-18. Working across nine distinct areas throughout the facility, Intertech's team completed 275,000 square feet of flooring installation in two months.

Buildings completed included:

  • Pit building/Paddock club
  • Team buildings
  • Medical facility
  • Grand Plaza
  • Maintenance building
  • VIP RV restrooms and laundry
  • Grandstand
  • Media building
  • Concessions

"This project was a great example of how we can add value to the owner," said Jon Barton, Intertech's director of production. "By bringing our team in early and working together on a budget, we were able to meet their needs and stay within the budget they wanted. Our budget numbers were real, and there was a lot of transparency and communication, and we developed a great relationship with the owners."

The project showcased Intertech's ability to deliver high-quality results under intense time pressure while maintaining the professional appearance a world-class racing facility demands.
