Marathon Petroleum Executive Offices Flooring Project

Project Profile: Marathon Petroleum Executive Offices, San Antonio

When the CEO of a major publicly traded corporation needed an executive office space commensurate with the company’s brand, the project’s general contractor knew just the right flooring partner for the job.

In late 2021, GW Mitchell Construction approached Intertech Flooring’s Billy Chrzan with the project, a 1,500-sq. ft. executive office in San Antonio for Marathon Petroleum President and CEO Michael Hennigan, a company with a strong commitment to integrity. Among its core values, the company website says, “We set high expectations for ourselves and build trust in each other, with business partners, shareholders and the communities where we work and live. We say what we’re going to do, and then do it.”

A Flooring Partner with Integrity

Having worked on numerous projects together in the past, GW Mitchell was well aware of Intertech Flooring’s own reputation for business integrity and stellar flooring work, making Intertech the perfect partner for this showcase space.

“They were looking for a wood flooring expert who had experience in pulling off very complicated jobs, and they knew that challenging jobs are our specialty,” said Billy Chrzan, Intertech Flooring project manager/safety and director of wood flooring.  “This entire space was being completed with one-of-a-kind items … from the paint to the bookcases, desk, flooring, and so on, it is all custom. They wanted a specialist they knew they could trust.”

Unique Flooring Specialists

After looking at the initial design, Intertech suggested a slight tweak to the wood flooring that the client loved even more than the original. Work on the space on the 12th floor of the Marathon building began in early 2022, with the manufacturing of multiple species and sizes of wood to fit the unique layout. Cut from large pieces of hardwood flooring, the design incorporated angled, curved, straight and parquet layouts using a mix of 7”x7” parquet, 3”x12”, 1 5/8”x10’ and 3”x3’ wood flooring pieces.

The center features 7”x7” quarter-turned pieces of white oak, custom cut and custom made, installed on a 45-degree angle. It is surrounded by a narrow line of black walnut, which in turn is surrounded by a line of 12”x3” white oak pieces set in soldier stand style. Outlining that is another narrow piece of black walnut, finalized up to the wall with 36”x3” white oak. As befitting the custom layout, the wood flooring uses a custom-mixed color as well.

Flooring Experts You Can Trust

Despite global supply chain challenges, the entire project was completed in less than five months, ahead of schedule and on budget. “This project is exactly the type of opportunity that our flooring team loves,” said Chrzan. “First, it is always a compliment to have repeat customers turn to us, and especially knowing this was such a high-profile showcase project. In addition, the complexity involved in this flooring really is graduate-level work that few installers can do. That kind of project requires both very experienced flooring expertise and, as importantly, a flooring company that can be trusted to exceed the client’s expectations with integrity.”
