When the George W. Bush Presidential Center aimed for LEED Platinum certification, every detail mattered. Intertech brought precision installation expertise to this 226,000-square-foot Dallas landmark, delivering custom carpet designs and sustainable flooring solutions worthy of a presidential library.

THE CHALLENGE

This ambitious project required coordination with more than 60 subcontractors and nearly 1.6 million work-hours of construction activity. At peak construction, over 650 workers were on site at one time, with each of the three building levels having a designated superintendent plus field superintendents for various areas.

Coordinating with multiple superintendents was critical to ensure that product delays in one area were factored into the flooring schedule so the Intertech team could maximize workflow. The Permanent Exhibit area presented its own complexity, featuring a combination of 12 different carpet tile colors arranged in a design with multiple radiuses and layouts that demanded precise cuts and meticulous attention to detail.

As a project fully funded by private donations, competitive pricing was essential while maintaining the quality standards expected of a presidential library pursuing LEED Platinum certification.

OUR SOLUTION

Intertech's proven relationship with Manhattan Construction opened the door, built on successful collaborations including the Dallas Cowboys Stadium and numerous other high-profile projects. Arriving at a budget that met the GC's needs took about a year, typical for large, complex projects of this scale. We were awarded the initial contract in late 2011 and began installation in late summer 2012.

The project featured custom-colored Bentley Mills carpet patterns developed over 10 years in collaboration with Robert A.M. Stern Architects, engineered using Antron Legacy Type 6,6 nylon fiber on multi-loop tufting equipment. These products were dyed using Bentley's state-of-the-art Fleissner Continuous Dye Range, capable of dyeing up to 20,000 square yards in one lot to ensure color consistency.

We installed 66,000 square feet of carpet, 10,000 square feet of linoleum, 9,000 lineal feet of rubber wall base and 600 square feet of rubber studio tile. A separate contract awarded in late summer 2012 added 16,000 square feet of carpet in the Permanent Exhibit area, where our crews executed the complicated installation with multiple radiuses and layouts that required precise cuts and meticulous attention to detail.

THE RESULTS

The George W. Bush Presidential Center achieved LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, becoming the first Presidential Library to achieve LEED certification for new construction. Our team successfully navigated the complex coordination requirements of a project with over 650 workers at peak construction, delivering quality installations on schedule.

The custom Bentley Mills carpet maintains its like-new appearance with minimal maintenance, and the intricate Permanent Exhibit flooring showcases the precision work Intertech crews are known for on complicated installations.
