When a century-old, 12-story hospital needs fast, disruptive-free flooring solutions on occupied floors, traditional methods won't cut it. Intertech brought 26 years of healthcare flooring expertise to CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio, delivering the speed and quality this challenging renovation demanded.
THE CHALLENGE
The general contractor had completed demolition on this approximately 100-year-old hospital but faced a critical problem: traditional slab cap methods were too slow and too disruptive for the partially occupied building. Lower and adjacent floors remained in use during construction, requiring a solution that wouldn't interfere with hospital operations.
The demolition had left the slab in poor condition with extensive cracking and numerous through-floor holes where self-leveling material could leak to other floors. Large pre-existing bathroom insets needed to be filled before any leveling could begin. With the GC's schedule falling behind, they needed a fast, competent solution that wouldn't compromise quality or disrupt patient care.
OUR SOLUTION
Laticrete® SUPERCAP® was the ideal answer for delivering dry, flat floors fast. Our team tested the slab above grade for moisture and alkalinity, confirming that a moisture barrier wasn't necessary. We filled the old bathroom insets first, then addressed all through-floor holes and cracks to prevent leakage. Every crack was vacuumed clean of demolition debris and pre-filled to ensure a smooth result.
The SUPERCAP installation process allowed other trades to follow just 24 hours after each floor was capped. This efficient workflow was replicated on every floor, helping the GC catch up on their weekly schedule and turn over each floor to the owner as originally planned. Intertech was also awarded the purchase and installation of all wear surfaces.
THE RESULTS
Our efficient Laticrete® SUPERCAP® installation process got the project back on schedule without disrupting hospital operations on occupied floors. The 24-hour turnaround time between flooring installation and follow-on trades kept the entire project moving forward, allowing the general contractor to meet their original timeline commitments.
